Osmangazi Municipality Abandoned Animals Natural Life and Treatment Center
Osmangazi is the central district of the metropolitan area of Bursa and in terms of population it is one of the biggest districts among Turkey with more than one million people. Osmangazi Municipality is the local authority for this large and crowded region. The main responsibilities of the municipality are stated in Municipality Law no: 1580. In total 700 staff are working within the municipality.
Natural Life and Treatment Center was established in 2007 and it is a unique facility across Europe. It was constructed on a 114.000 square meters area with 13 buildings. In the facility there are an acceptance unit, a policlinic, operation room, observation unit, young and pregnant animals unit, dog training areas, cat house, natural living environments, horse walking track, social equipment areas, multi-purpose training center and a gift shop. Distinguished veterinarians are working in this center and thanks to their wonderful efforts many animals have been adopted. This qualified personnel working in the center will be assisting the volunteer and will be able to transmit valuable practical and theoretical information to the volunteer during his/her EVS. Moreover veterinarians working in the center have English skills, so that the volunteer will not encounter with communication problems during his/her activities.
We also want to build a long-term partnership with the sending organization for the future projects. As we are organizing international exchange, training courses and similar events and we are accredited as sending organization, it will be beneficial to build a contact with the sending organisation.
Task of Volunteers:
The EVS volunteer shall be considered as an equal part of the Natural Life and Treatment Center team. A to do list shall be delivered on Mondays and feedbacks shall be collected each Friday afternoon. The volunteer will have a life changing, unique experience, dealing with outdoor activities, gaining practical and useful information in this field. The Natural Life and Treatment Center is the biggest and most comprehensive facility for animals in Turkey. Therefore the volunteer will have chance to learn from practical information about animal protection, their training and they will put contribution to their adoption process by concerned people.
Profile of Volunteer:
The tasks of the volunteer require a considerable capacity of human relations and equipped with the love toward animals. Therefore having perceptible competences for good communication, enthusiastic for working in a group and in outdoor activities are assets. We are looking for energetic, young people who like animals and nature.
A typical week will be like this:

The weekly programme is an example and shall be subjected to change in the run of the project, as the volunteer and the staff will get to know each other. We will develop a programme that will be suitable for both parts.
Language course: The volunteer shall take Turkish lessons once a week (1 x 4/5 hours).
Working Hours and days off:
The volunteer shall work 5 days a week. The duration between the volunteer house and the workplace cannot be considered within the working hours. The volunteer shall have two consecutive days off per week and shall be entitled to use 2 extra days off per month for the duration of the project. Usage of off-days shall be decided mutually and should be informed to hosting organization at least 2 weeks before.
The volunteer shall be entitled to have off days once there is national holiday in Turkey and these days shall not be counted as off day. However national holidays or religious feast in the home country of the volunteer (Christmas, Eastern, etc.) cannot be considered as natural off days for the volunteer.
Absence in the workplace without information shall be considered as off day. Once the volunteer shall not exceed the limit of off days (2 days monthly * number of months of the duration of the activity), this shall be reflected on the allocations.
Food and accommodation:
The volunteer shall live in a shared apartment, provided by Osmangazi Municipality, with other EVS volunteers from different countries. He/she shall have a single bed, but live in a shared room and shared cooking, washing and laundry facilities.
Cooking materials shall be provided by the organization and the volunteers can organize themselves and cook in their apartment. Once volunteers need new equipment to the house, they should inform the coordinators and the relevant items shall be provided within a month.
The house of the volunteers shall be under the possession of the municipality and the volunteers are not entitled to make physical changement such as painting, removing the doors, etc. Once it is detected, the volunteers shall be asked to unchange and given particular time. If they insist not to unchage, the hosting organization shall unchange it but this sum shall be reflected to the allocations of the volunteer.
Food money (350 TL per month) shall be provided by the hosting organization monthly and this sum shall be transferred to the bank account that the volunteer shall have as soon as he/she got the residence permit.
No guest from outside without permission shall be possible.
Volunteers shall decide the tasks in the house and they shall be responsible from the cleaning of the house. Volunteers shall be encouraged to create rules for the house on their own. In case there is a quarrel or dispute among them, they are in charge of finding solution in a process where hosting and coordinating organizations shall be involved. The solution cannot be finding a new place on no account.
Local Transport:
The volunteer will work in Natural Life and Treatment Center, which is 10 km far from the city center. It is close to the rail system and transportation to the accommodation place is easy. Moreover daily transportation from volunteer’s house to Shelter shall be provided by municipality’s shuttle services. The apartment arranged for the volunteers is located in the city center; thereby he/she shall have the possibility to easily reach all social and cultural activities.
No allocation shall be provided for the transportation due to the existance of shuttles. Once the volunteer misses the shuttle and has to use the public transportation, this sum shall be paid from the volunteer’s own pocket without reimbursement.
Volunteer Allowance:
The volunteer will receive a monthly allowance of 85 EUR, according to the Youth in Action guidelines.
